Winter Songbook Workshop

An afternoon diving into the art of songwriting for voice and piano

Are you a singer, instrumentalist or composer interested in learning acoustic song-writing? Join composer Anita Datta (Royal Philharmonic Society, Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, Manchester Camerata), singer Rebecca Lea (BBC Singers, I Fagiolini, Tallis Scholars) and pianist Caroline Jaya Ratnam (Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Guildhall School of Music and Drama) for an afternoon diving deep into the art of writing for voice and piano. Listen to Rebecca and Caroline perform songs from the forthcoming album The New Winter Songbook, explore song-writing, singing and instrumental techniques, devise your own lyrics and help create a brand new song, which Rebecca and Caroline will include in their new album, due to be released in November 2025. This is a multi-skills, inclusive workshop open to all young people aged 12 - 19.

The New Winter Songbook

"I bring my past, I bring my future,

I bring my rights and I bring my song." Belong by Lemn Sissay

The New Winter Songbook is a new, diverse song collection for voice and piano written, curated and performed by living composers, poets, workshop participants and professional musicians. The project will oversee the creation of a new songbook reflecting the ethnicity, cultures, faiths and outlooks of people living through winter in the UK in the 2020s. What does winter represent to us now? Should we still be writing about snow? How do different communities celebrate the season?. The New Winter Songbook album will be released in November 2025. It will be accompanied by a launch concert in central London in which workshop participants will be invited to perform.
